The Northern Line, which connects Bangkok and Chiang Mai, is the most popular among all the rail routes in Thailand.

There are five sets of trains running between Bangkok and Chiang Mai every day, including special express, express, and rapid trains.

How to Choose a Train Type and Seat Class

From Bangkok to Chiang Mai, there are four overnight trains and one daytime train. From Chiang Mai to Bangkok, there are three overnight trains and two daytime trains.

Many travelers choose an overnight train to save the cost of one night’s accommodation.

Thailand’s trains, even the express and special express ones, are always delayed. Therefore, please leave plenty of time for the itinerary you have planned after your train journey. Don’t arrange a flight after a train journey.

First and second-class sleepers on trains between Bangkok and Chiang Mai are very popular and are always sold out weeks before the departure date. It is advisable to book sleeper tickets as early as possible.

Second-class seats are available on trains between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. However, they are not recommended for such a long journey.
