Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is a coastal city in southeastern India. It is the fourth largest city in the country and is the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. Due to its convenient connections to other parts of India and the rest of the world, Chennai is also called the “South India Gateway”.

Four major terminal railway stations provide transportation services for the city: Chennai Central Railway Station, Chennai Egmore Railway Station, Chennai Beach Railway Station, and Tambaram Railway Station. Other small stations in Chennai include Moore Market Complex Railway Station and Chennai Park Railway Station.

Chennai Central Railway Station

Chennai Central Railway Station is the most important and largest station in Chennai, as well as being one of the transportation hubs of India. It is a terminal station for long-distance trains, suburban trains, and metro trains.

The station has beautiful red architecture and was built during the British colonial period, giving it a history of more than 140 years. Being the busiest station in the city, Chennai Central Railway Station is well-connected to the suburbs of other Indian cities.

An international ticket office is available on the second floor of the station. One part of the station, called the Moore Market Complex, exclusively serves suburban trains.

Chennai Egmore Railway Station

The Gothic-style Chennai Egmore Railway Station has a history of 109 years and is now the landmark of this city. More than 60 trains depart from Egmore Railway Station every day. Half of them are terminated at this station.

Chennai Beach Railway Station

As one of the main terminal stations in the city, Chennai Beach Railway Station is adjacent to the coast, with easy access to other parts of the city. This station mainly serves south and southwest lines. Chennai Suburban Railway’s South Line and the MRTS line intersect at this station. Chennai Beach Railway Station is also a transportation hub for local long-distance and medium-distance buses.

Tambaram Railway Station

Located in a suburb of Chennai, Tambaram Railway Station is the third busiest station in the city, after Chennai Central Railway Station and Chennai Egmore Railway Station. It is well-connected to other stations in Chennai and serves more than 150,000 passengers every day. It is the busiest commuting station for suburban trains.
